How we handle your data

Last updated: February 2026

Overview

ChannelHop is a free travel cost comparison tool. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect (very little) and how we use it.

Data We Collect

Journey Data

When you use the calculator, you enter a UK starting point and French destination. This data is used solely to calculate your journey costs and is not stored on our servers. Journey data is processed in real-time and discarded after your results are generated.

Trip Builder Data

If you use the Trip Builder feature, your saved trips are stored in your browser's localStorage. This data never leaves your device and is not transmitted to our servers.

Settings

Your preferences (such as default vehicle type) are stored in your browser's localStorage. This data stays on your device.

Third-Party Services

OpenRouteService

We use OpenRouteService for geocoding (converting location names to coordinates) and route calculation. When you enter a location, the search query is sent to their API. See the OpenRouteService privacy policy.

OpenStreetMap / Leaflet

Maps are rendered using Leaflet with OpenStreetMap tiles. Map tile requests are made directly to OpenStreetMap's tile servers. See the OpenStreetMap privacy policy.

Cookies

ChannelHop does not use tracking cookies. We do not use Google Analytics or any third-party analytics service. The only browser storage used is localStorage for saving your Trip Builder data and settings, which is not transmitted to any server.

Affiliate Links & Third-Party Booking

Some links on ChannelHop are affiliate links provided through CJ Affiliate (Commission Junction). When you click an affiliate link and make a booking on a partner site, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Our current affiliate partner is Direct Ferries, which sells ferry crossings and Eurotunnel tickets. When you click an affiliate link, CJ Affiliate and/or Direct Ferries may set a referral cookie (typically lasting 30 days) on the partner site to track the referral. This cookie is set by the partner site, not by ChannelHop.

ChannelHop does not receive any personal data about your booking. We only receive confirmation that a booking was made via our referral link, along with the commission amount. Your booking details remain between you and the booking provider.

Data We Do Not Collect

  • We do not collect personal information (name, email, phone)
  • We do not require account creation or login
  • We do not use tracking cookies or analytics
  • We do not sell or share data with third parties
  • We do not store your journey searches on our servers
